West Bengal Rail Projects Boost Regional Connectivity
West Bengal is set for another phase of railway infrastructure expansion as multiple projects aimed at improving passenger mobility, network capacity and operational safety are scheduled for inauguration this week. The initiatives are expected to strengthen connections between eastern India and the National Capital Region while supporting freight movement and regional economic activity through upgraded rail infrastructure.
Among the key developments is the introduction of a direct rail service linking Purulia with Anand Vihar Terminal in Delhi. The new connection is expected to reduce dependence on multiple train transfers for passengers travelling between eastern India and northern states, particularly benefiting students, workers and families who regularly commute across the corridor. Transport planners note that improved inter-state connectivity can encourage labour mobility and facilitate greater economic integration between industrial and emerging urban centres.The West Bengal rail projects also include the completion of six modernised railway stations under the national station redevelopment programme. The upgraded facilities feature improved passenger circulation areas, enhanced accessibility for elderly and differently abled travellers, better lighting, digital information systems and upgraded waiting spaces. A third railway line between Belda and Dantan has been completed to ease congestion on a busy section of the network, while an Automatic Block Signalling system between Kalaikunda and Kanimohuli is expected to improve operational efficiency by enabling trains to run at shorter yet safer intervals.
