Indian Railways has cleared a ₹440 crore investment to add a third railway line between Nimpura West Outer Cabin and Midnapur in West Bengal, a move aimed at easing congestion on one of eastern India’s busiest rail corridors. The decision is expected to improve the reliability of both passenger and freight services while strengthening regional connectivity that underpins economic activity across the state.
The approved Midnapur rail capacity project covers a 14.52-kilometre stretch within the South Eastern Railway network, where traffic demand has steadily increased over the years. The corridor forms part of a high-utilisation route that carries a mix of long-distance passenger trains, suburban services and freight traffic, creating operational constraints during peak periods. Rail authorities believe an additional line will provide greater flexibility in train scheduling and reduce delays caused by conflicting movements.Transport planners note that expanding track infrastructure often delivers wider economic benefits beyond railway operations. More dependable rail movement supports industrial supply chains, improves access to employment centres and reduces travel uncertainty for daily commuters.
