West Bengal has initiated discussions with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) on a broad infrastructure strategy that could reshape industrial growth, urban mobility and regional connectivity across the state. While no financial commitment has been announced, the dialogue signals an early effort to align future infrastructure investments with economic expansion, improved public services and more resilient urban development.
The discussions come at a time when the state is seeking to strengthen its industrial base while addressing long-standing gaps in transport, logistics and urban infrastructure. According to officials familiar with the deliberations, the proposed framework spans industrial corridors, logistics facilities, urban transport upgrades, worker accommodation, tourism-linked infrastructure and water supply improvements. These initiatives are intended to improve connectivity between manufacturing centres and emerging urban economies rather than focus on isolated projects.A significant element of the West Bengal infrastructure plan is the concept of creating city economic regions that integrate industries, transport systems and urban services. Urban planners increasingly view such regional development models as essential for reducing congestion in major cities while distributing employment opportunities across secondary urban centres.
