West Bengal has introduced a statewide Free Bus Travel programme for women, allowing eligible passengers to travel without fares on all state-operated bus services from June 1. The measure is expected to reduce daily transport costs for lakhs of commuters while improving access to education, employment and essential public services. Beyond immediate financial relief, the initiative signals a wider policy shift towards making public transport more inclusive and accessible.
The Transport Department has confirmed that the benefit applies across both short and long-distance state-run bus routes. Until dedicated digital smart cards are issued, women can use government-issued identity documents to access the scheme, with conductors issuing zero-value tickets after verification.
