Vidyavihar ROB Deadline Extended to 2026

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced a significant delay in the completion of the second phase of the Vidyavihar Railway Over-Bridge (ROB) project, extending the deadline to March 2026.

This extension, a setback from the previously scheduled completion date of December 2024, results from the identification of over 80 structures and 180 trees that will need to be demolished or transplanted. Originally conceived in 2016, the Vidyavihar ROB project aims to improve traffic flow and connectivity in Mumbai. The first phase, completed in early 2023, saw the installation of two open-web-girders—the longest of their kind in India—over the railway tracks. This marked a significant milestone in the project, paving the way for subsequent phases. However, the second phase, which involves constructing approach roads on both the eastern and western sides of the bridge, has encountered unforeseen complications.

The BMC’s recent assessment revealed that approximately 87 structures, including residential buildings, religious sites, shops, and a civic toilet block, are situated along the proposed alignment of the approach roads. Of these, 60 structures are located on the western side, while 27 are on the eastern side. In addition to structural obstacles, around 180 trees are also situated along the path of the new roads. The BMC has initiated procedures to address these issues, having already issued notices to the owners of the affected structures and coordinating with tree authorities to determine which trees will be cut down and which will be transplanted.

A senior official from the BMC indicated that while some structures have already been demolished, the process is ongoing and expected to accelerate after the monsoon season. The project, with an estimated cost of INR 69.50 crore, has retained the contractor responsible for the first phase, ensuring continuity in execution. The delay in completing the ROB is anticipated to impact traffic patterns between Ghatkopar and Vidyavihar in the eastern suburbs. Upon completion, the ROB is expected to alleviate congestion and enhance connectivity between Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg (LBS) and Ramkrishna Chemburkar Marg, providing a vital link for commuters.
