Vellore Stations Gain Safer Passenger Access Infrastructure
Southern Railway has begun upgrading four railway stations across Vellore and Ranipet districts with new foot overbridges and lift facilities, marking another phase of station modernisation on the busy Chennai–Bengaluru rail corridor. The initiative aims to improve passenger movement, accessibility and safety while supporting more inclusive public transport infrastructure along one of southern India’s most significant intercity routes.
The works are underway at Walajah, Virinchipuram, Gudiyatham and Melattur railway stations as part of the broader Station Redevelopment Project, which seeks to enhance commuter experience beyond major railway junctions. While metropolitan stations have witnessed modern passenger amenities over the past decade, smaller regional stations have often lagged despite handling substantial daily footfall and train operations. The station accessibility upgrades include new foot overbridges equipped with lifts, redesigned passenger circulation areas, improved lighting, platform connectivity and rainwater harvesting systems. Urban mobility experts note that such interventions are increasingly essential as railway stations evolve into multimodal transport hubs serving ageing populations, women travellers, people with disabilities and passengers carrying luggage.
Officials associated with the project indicate that the construction is expected to be completed within approximately nine months. Each bridge is estimated to require an investment of around ₹1.5 crore, with lift installation representing a significant share of the overall expenditure. Every lift is designed to accommodate multiple passengers simultaneously while occupying a smaller footprint than escalators and requiring comparatively lower operational energy.Beyond improving convenience, the project addresses a long-standing safety concern at intermediate railway stations where passengers often cross tracks instead of using footbridges. Enhanced vertical connectivity, protective fencing, surveillance cameras and weather-protected walkways are expected to encourage safer movement across platforms while reducing the likelihood of track-related accidents. The redevelopment also incorporates ramps to improve access for persons with disabilities, aligning with the broader objective of making railway infrastructure more universally accessible. Urban planners increasingly view barrier-free mobility as a critical element of sustainable transport systems, particularly in growing regional centres where public transport remains the primary mode of travel for thousands of residents every day.
The four stations occupy a strategic position between major railway junctions on the Chennai–Bengaluru–Coimbatore corridor, serving express and passenger services that connect industrial centres, educational institutions and emerging economic clusters. Collectively, these stations manage more than 150 train movements daily while serving over 3,000 boarding passengers at each location, underscoring the importance of station accessibility upgrades beyond metropolitan networks. The latest investment follows similar accessibility improvements at larger stations including Arakkonam, Katpadi, Jolarpet, Ambur and Vaniyambadi. However, transport specialists suggest that infrastructure modernisation should continue alongside regular maintenance, last-mile connectivity, pedestrian-friendly station approaches and climate-resilient design features to maximise long-term public value. As regional rail travel continues to grow, ensuring that smaller stations offer safe, inclusive and efficient passenger infrastructure will remain central to building a more resilient and people-focused transport network.
