A flood-damaged service lane on NH-48 near Puttuthakku has reopened after being rebuilt with concrete, restoring an important local connection for buses, ambulances, farmers and other road users. The intervention addresses a recurring monsoon vulnerability, but also highlights how drainage failures around rapidly changing peri-urban landscapes can undermine major highway infrastructure.
The 300-metre service lane, around 20 feet wide, runs close to the Christian Medical College area and had become difficult to use after heavy rain in December 2025. Water flowing from abandoned quarry areas inundated the road, stripping its bitumen surface and leaving large potholes. The NH-48 service lane was subsequently given temporary repairs. However, the underlying exposure to high-volume runoff remained. Authorities therefore opted for a concrete carriageway, designed to withstand water flows that previously damaged the asphalt surface.
The reconstruction involved removing the damaged pavement and raising the road base with roughly two feet of crushed stone before placing a one-foot concrete layer. The completed surface was allowed to cure for more than a month and inspected for defects before traffic was restored.The engineering response is significant because the problem was not simply road deterioration. It was also a water-management issue. Officials said runoff from the quarry areas can now pass towards nearby canals and lakes before reaching the Palar river, reducing the likelihood of water accumulating across the carriageway.For residents, the reopening has a practical economic and social impact. The NH-48 service lane serves mixed traffic rather than only highway users. Town buses, autorickshaws, cars, two-wheelers and tractors use it to reach nearby settlements and agricultural procurement centres.
Emergency access is particularly important. Ambulances travelling towards government hospitals and CMC had faced difficult conditions on the damaged surface, with several vehicles using the route each day. A degraded service road can therefore become a healthcare-access problem, not merely a transport inconvenience. The repair also points to a wider challenge along expanding highway corridors. Large road projects can improve regional connectivity while leaving local drainage, crossings and access routes exposed to climate-related disruption. In quarry landscapes, blocked or altered natural drainage can intensify this risk.Urban planners and infrastructure experts increasingly stress that highway resilience must be assessed beyond the main carriageway. Service roads, drainage channels, pedestrian access and emergency routes need to function as one system, particularly around growing healthcare, residential and commercial clusters. The rebuilt lane should reduce immediate disruption during heavy rain. The next test will be whether drainage routes around Puttuthakku are maintained alongside the pavement, ensuring that a stronger road does not become a temporary fix for a wider water-management problem.
