The ongoing operation focuses on service roads adjoining the national highway near the Collectorate area in Sathuvachari, where roadside commercial extensions had gradually reduced the usable carriageway. Urban transport experts note that service lanes are intended to separate local traffic from high-speed highway movement, but unauthorised structures frequently undermine this function, increasing congestion and raising accident risks. While several businesses dismantled temporary projections extending onto the roadway, civic teams have now begun removing permanent concrete additions and metal structures that continued to obstruct movement. Authorities expect the operation to extend across approximately two kilometres in its initial phase. Infrastructure planners observe that protecting the intended width of service roads is increasingly important as traffic volumes continue to grow along the Chennai–Bengaluru economic corridor, one of southern India’s busiest freight and passenger routes.
