Vasai-Virar flood compensation has reached 15,000 affected residents, with ₹30 crore deposited into their bank accounts after the city faced prolonged flooding between July 4 and 8, the Vasai tehsil administration said in a report published on September 26.
The assistance has been released at the rate of ₹20,000 per beneficiary. The administration said damage assessment records, or panchnamas, have been completed for 19,000 flood-affected people in Vasai taluka. Payments to the remaining eligible beneficiaries are yet to be completed.
The flooding followed several days of intense rain at the beginning of July. According to the report, floodwater remained in parts of the city for three to four consecutive days, severely disrupting normal life across Vasai-Virar. Low-lying neighbourhoods were among the worst affected as water entered hundreds of homes and shops.
Residents, local businesses and shopkeepers reported damage to stored foodgrains, clothing, electronic goods and other household and commercial items. The flooding therefore affected both household assets and the daily operations of small businesses in areas where water entered buildings.
Strong winds accompanying the weather event also damaged more than 200 houses, including both temporary and permanent structures. Some of these houses suffered partial damage. Affected residents had sought immediate government assistance after the flood, according to the report.
Following the flooding, the government initiated damage assessments in Vasai taluka. Officials carried out panchnamas to record losses suffered by residents and determine eligibility for assistance. The administration subsequently approved a grant of ₹20,000 for each affected person whose assessment had been completed under the applicable government rules.
The first round of transfers covers 15,000 of the 19,000 people whose damage assessments have been completed. The total amount released in this round is ₹30 crore, calculated at ₹20,000 per beneficiary. The report did not specify the date on which the transfers were initiated or provide a schedule for the remaining 4,000 beneficiaries.
An online correction facility has also been made available for affected residents whose details require changes, according to the report. The facility is intended for the remaining affected people and for correcting information connected with the relief process.
The Vasai tehsil administration’s next steps are to process the remaining eligible beneficiaries and address corrections submitted through the online system. The final number of payments will depend on the completion and validation of the remaining records.
