The Palghar branch of the Maharashtra Andhashraddha Nirmoolan Samiti has asked local authorities to take stricter action against noise pollution during religious festivals and public celebrations in Vasai, according to a report published by Loksatta – Vasai-Virar on September 9.
The organisation has sought special enforcement measures during festivals and called for tighter implementation of the Noise Pollution (Regulation and Control) Rules. It has also demanded restrictions on the use of DJs, loudspeakers and high-capacity sound systems during public celebrations.
According to the report, high-powered amplifiers are routinely used during Ganeshotsav, Dahi Handi, Navratri and festivals observed by other communities. The organisation said that violations of prescribed noise rules had increased in recent times and called for dedicated teams to monitor sound levels and act against breaches.
The demand follows wider discussion in Maharashtra after Pune-based Vidhyanand Bapat called for a ban on DJs and loudspeakers during Ganeshotsav and other public festivals. The issue has since attracted attention in other parts of the state, the report said.
The Palghar branch said excessive sound from public celebrations was causing difficulties for children, older people, patients and students. It also raised concerns about the possible health effects of prolonged exposure to loud noise, while asking the administration to ensure that existing regulations are enforced without distinction between festivals or communities.
The report did not mention any new order from the Vasai-Virar civic administration or police authorities in response to the demand. The organisation’s request is for stricter enforcement, special monitoring arrangements and action against the use of high-capacity sound systems in violation of applicable noise-control rules.
