UP to Host First BrahMos Missile Facility

India is set to mark a major leap in indigenous defence production with the inauguration of its first BrahMos missile manufacturing facility in Lucknow on May 11.

The development comes amid heightened tensions with Pakistan and underscores the country’s strategic push towards defence self-reliance. Established with an investment of ₹300 crore by BrahMos Aerospace, the facility is part of the ambitious Defence Industrial Corridor championed by the Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh government. Officials confirmed on Thursday that the plant has been completed within 3.5 years of land allocation, signalling rapid progress in defence infrastructure. In December 2021, the Uttar Pradesh government provided 80 hectares of land free of cost for the unit, with the Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA) closely monitoring its implementation. “The Lucknow node will not only produce BrahMos missiles but will also expand to manufacturing other strategic defence systems,” said Shrihari Pratap Shahi, Additional CEO of UPEIDA.

This is the first high-tech missile production unit in Uttar Pradesh and is expected to significantly strengthen India’s military capabilities while positioning the state as a key defence manufacturing hub. The project will directly employ around 500 engineers and technicians, with thousands of indirect jobs generated through ancillary industries and support services. BrahMos Aerospace is a joint venture between India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Russia’s NPOM, with 50.5% Indian and 49.5% Russian ownership. The supersonic cruise missile developed by the venture is among the world’s fastest and most precise weapons in its class. Alongside BrahMos, the state has allocated 117.35 hectares to 12 other defence companies under the corridor project. Aeroloy Technologies, for instance, has already completed the first phase of its ₹320 crore facility over 20 hectares.

Together, these projects are projected to create more than 3,000 jobs, catalysing industrial growth in Lucknow and advancing India’s defence manufacturing ecosystem.
