The Union government has approved a ₹211 crore Ulhasnagar Water Project under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) 2.0 programme, paving the way for a comprehensive upgrade of the city’s drinking water infrastructure. The investment is expected to improve water security, modernise ageing assets and strengthen service delivery for a rapidly expanding urban population within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The sanctioned project seeks to address long-standing challenges associated with ageing pipelines, transmission losses and growing demand for potable water. Urban infrastructure specialists note that improving water distribution efficiency has become increasingly important for fast-growing cities, where population growth and climate variability are placing additional pressure on municipal water systems.

According to project details, the Ulhasnagar Water Project will include the construction of a new intake well, jackwell and pump house, along with a modern water treatment plant. The scheme also provides for raw water rising mains, an upgraded citywide distribution network, solar-powered infrastructure and supporting facilities designed to improve the reliability and sustainability of water supply operations. Water treatment infrastructure is expected to draw raw water from the Ulhas River before distributing treated drinking water through an upgraded network. Experts say replacing ageing infrastructure and reducing physical water losses can significantly improve service quality while lowering operational costs over the long term. Investments in energy-efficient pumping systems and renewable energy components could also reduce the environmental footprint of urban water utilities. Urban planners believe the project reflects a broader shift towards integrated water infrastructure under the AMRUT 2.0 framework, which prioritises universal access to drinking water alongside improved operational efficiency. However, they caution that infrastructure investments alone cannot guarantee long-term water resilience.

Sustained maintenance, effective asset management, demand-side conservation and protection of river catchments will remain essential to securing future water availability. The project is also expected to generate wider economic benefits by supporting residential growth, commercial activity and public health. Reliable drinking water is increasingly viewed as critical urban infrastructure that influences investment, housing development and quality of life. Reduced leakages and improved network performance can enhance municipal finances by minimising non-revenue water while ensuring more equitable distribution across neighbourhoods. Local civic representatives have welcomed the approval, stating that the funding will enable completion of pending treatment and distribution infrastructure required to strengthen the city’s water supply system. The project follows earlier investments in pipeline expansion and is intended to complement existing distribution improvements with upgraded treatment and storage facilities.

As implementation progresses, urban development experts emphasise the importance of transparent execution, timely completion and environmental safeguards. Integrating renewable energy, efficient treatment technologies and resilient water infrastructure can help ensure that the Ulhasnagar Water Project not only expands access to safe drinking water but also supports long-term climate adaptation and sustainable urban development across the region.
