Two-Month-Old Tests Positive for HMPV in Ahmedabad Case Rises to 3
In a concerning development, a two-month-old infant from Dungarpur, Rajasthan, has tested positive for Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) at a private healthcare facility in Ahmedabad. This brings the total number of HMPV cases in the region to three. The infant was admitted on December 24 with symptoms of a respiratory infection and, following diagnostic procedures, tested positive for HMPV on December 26. However, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) only received the report recently, as the private hospital delayed its notification.
According to Bhavin Solanki, the in-charge medical officer of health for AMC, the child’s condition required initial ventilator support but has since stabilised. The infant was placed in isolation to prevent the spread of the infection. This case marks a significant moment in the ongoing surveillance of HMPV, a respiratory virus that has been detected globally, including in India. Solanki also confirmed that the situation is being closely monitored to ensure no further spread occurs within the local community.
Previously, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) identified two HMPV cases in Karnataka as part of its routine monitoring of respiratory viral pathogens. While this marks the third confirmed HMPV case in India, the Union health ministry has reassured the public that no unusual surge in Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) or Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI) has been observed nationwide. According to the ministry, HMPV is a known virus that circulates globally, and the recent cases are part of the broader, regular trends in respiratory infections.
