Senior district officials recently held consultations with civic agencies, transport operators, police authorities and highway engineers following field assessments conducted around the crowded interchange. The exercise comes as residents and commuters continue to experience severe delays on key roads linking Trichy with neighbouring districts and towns. The Chathiram facility serves as a major gateway for passengers travelling towards Ariyalur, Perambalur, Karur, Thuraiyur and Cuddalore. However, a large number of intercity and mofussil buses frequently halt outside designated platforms, occupying stretches of College Road and Chennai Trunk Road and creating persistent traffic bottlenecks.
Urban mobility experts note that such congestion hotspots not only slow vehicle movement but also undermine public transport efficiency and increase fuel consumption and emissions. Improving the functioning of the Trichy bus terminus has therefore become increasingly important from both sustainability and economic perspectives.Officials are examining the possibility of redirecting a section of long-distance bus operations to the Kalaignar Karunanidhi Bus Terminus at Panjapur, which was developed to accommodate future growth and reduce pressure on older transport infrastructure. The review has also highlighted concerns over city buses picking up and dropping passengers outside the terminal premises, further contributing to road congestion and pedestrian safety challenges. Experts say integrated transport management and better enforcement of designated stopping points are essential for improving commuter experiences and ensuring smoother traffic flows. Attention has additionally turned to the delayed Mallachipuram-Odathurai flyover project. The 2.6-kilometre elevated corridor is expected to provide an alternative route around the heavily congested zone and support faster movement between different parts of the city. Accelerating such projects, analysts say, can help minimise travel delays while supporting more efficient land use and lower transport-related emissions. The latest review underscores the growing need for Trichy to modernise its public transport ecosystem as the city expands.
