Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced infrastructure projects worth Rs 250 crore for Tinsukia, including road and drainage works, an integrated District Commissioner’s office, a 1,000-seat auditorium and several civic upgrades.
Speaking at Manab Kalyan Puja Bhawan, Sarma said Tinsukia had not received adequate attention in infrastructure development and urban beautification compared with other parts of Assam. He said the government would intensify efforts to improve civic amenities, public facilities and educational infrastructure in the commercially important town.
The largest component of the announcement is an allocation of Rs 200 crore for road construction and drainage improvement across Tinsukia district. Sarma called for consultations involving the Tinsukia Municipal Board, the local MLA and residents to identify priority projects.
The proposed integrated District Commissioner’s office will bring various government departments together at a single location. According to the announcement, the facility is intended to streamline administration and improve residents’ access to public services.
The state government also plans to develop a 1,000-seat auditorium at a cost of Rs 50 crore. Other proposed works include a bus terminus, a multilevel parking facility, the upgradation of Kachujan Stadium, improved street lighting and the modernisation of the district library.
Sarma said the town’s residents had contributed significantly to Assam’s economy but that a perception had developed that Tinsukia had lagged in infrastructure and beautification. “As CM, I feel that we have done somewhat less than what should have been done here. There is a need to do more for Tinsukia,” he said.
The announcement came during an inspection of four civic development projects being implemented through the Tinsukia Municipal Board with funding from the 15th Finance Commission. Together, these projects represent an investment of more than Rs 8 crore.
The projects include the development and beautification of Swahid Piyoli Phukan Playground at Tamulbari, the rejuvenation of Bor Godha Pukhuri at Sripuria, and beautification works at Mahatma Gandhi Park and Bishnu Rabha Park. The playground project is estimated to cost Rs 4.54 crore, while the pond rejuvenation project has an estimated cost of Rs 2.33 crore. The two park projects are valued at Rs 45.90 lakh and Rs 57.27 lakh, respectively.
Sarma also launched Samagra Seva, a digital platform developed at a cost of around Rs 1.5 crore to provide municipal services through residents’ smartphones. The application allows users to track garbage collection vehicles in real time, pay property taxes, apply for trade licences and building permissions, and register civic complaints without visiting municipal offices.
On higher education, Sarma reiterated the government’s plan to establish a university and an engineering college in Tinsukia after a medical college is developed in the district. He said the government had promised a medical college, a university and an engineering college in every district during the last election campaign.
The chief minister also said Tinsukia needed a renewed environment for investment and industrialisation, and called for public cooperation to sustain development and strengthen the district’s economic potential. The immediate implementation process will involve consultations with the municipal board, the local MLA and residents to determine priority works.
