Thane Ring Metro is being linked with Metro Line 4 and Metro Line 5, creating proposed interchange connections to Mumbai, Bhiwandi and Kalyan, according to a report by Loksatta. The plan would expand the project beyond internal travel within Thane and give passengers a rail-based option for journeys outside the city.
The internal metro project is under construction and is being implemented through MahaMetro, the report said. Its integration with the Wadala-Kasarvadavali Metro Line 4 and the Kapsarwadi-Bhiwandi-Kalyan Metro Line 5 is expected to allow passengers to change trains at designated stations and continue towards the three neighbouring urban areas.
The proposed connection with Metro Line 4 is planned near the Dongripada area, where a Ring Metro station is expected to be linked with the corridor. Metro Line 4 is intended to connect Thane with Mumbai. A second connection is planned near Balkum, where an internal metro station is expected to be linked with Metro Line 5, the corridor serving the Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan belt.
The arrangement would give Thane passengers access to Mumbai in one direction and Bhiwandi and Kalyan in another through connections between metro corridors. At present, the report does not provide interchange design details, passenger forecasts, fares or an operational date for the proposed links.
The Thane internal metro project has faced opposition from some organisations and residents, according to Loksatta. Concerns have made the project contentious, although the report does not specify the individual objections or the locations affected. MahaMetro has undertaken a public awareness campaign to address residents’ questions about the project.
The proposed interchanges also place the project within a wider regional mobility network rather than treating it only as a city-level line. Thane’s daily travel patterns extend beyond its municipal boundaries, with Mumbai, Bhiwandi and Kalyan forming connected employment, housing and commercial zones. Linking the corridors could allow passengers to transfer between routes instead of depending entirely on road-based travel for such journeys.
The report identifies the connections as part of the project’s evolving plan, but it does not establish whether the proposed station links require additional approvals, design changes or revised construction milestones. It also does not state how the connections will be integrated with existing road access, feeder services or interchange facilities.
Construction of the Thane internal metro has begun, while MahaMetro’s public outreach campaign is continuing.
