Thane’s next phase of mass-transit expansion could extend metro connectivity into Kalwa, Mumbra and Diva, as the Maharashtra government moves ahead with a feasibility assessment and Detailed Project Report for a new corridor. The proposal is significant for a rapidly urbanising belt that remains heavily dependent on suburban rail and roads, while also positioning the emerging network around future regional transport hubs. The proposed Thane Metro expansion would connect Thane with Kalwa, Mumbra and Diva, with additional connectivity being examined towards areas including Kolbad and Old Thane. Maha Metro has been tasked with completing the feasibility exercise and preparing the DPR within six months. The report will establish the final alignment, construction method, investment requirement and implementation schedule.
The proposal is still at the planning stage, so its eventual route and cost cannot yet be treated as settled. A mix of elevated and underground construction is being considered, with technical studies expected to determine the most suitable configuration. This distinction is important for a corridor passing through densely settled neighbourhoods where land availability, construction disruption and interchange design will influence both cost and delivery. The Thane Metro expansion also has a wider network objective. The proposed corridor is expected to connect with the Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail system at Diva and intersect Metro Line 12 around Manpada. Metro Line 12 is being developed as the Kalyan–Taloja corridor, creating the potential for connections between several major growth centres in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The MMRDA has separately advanced plans for extending Metro Line 5 towards Ulhasnagar, further increasing the importance of coordinated network planning.
The Diva connection could become particularly important as the high-speed rail network develops. A station by itself does not guarantee useful regional connectivity; passengers need efficient feeder services to reach employment centres and residential districts. Integrating metro, suburban railway and high-speed rail can therefore improve the value of each investment while reducing dependence on private vehicles for connecting journeys. For Kalwa and Mumbra, the potential benefit is more immediate. Both areas have experienced sustained residential growth, but transport capacity has not always expanded at the same pace. A reliable rapid-transit option could shorten transfers, improve access to jobs and services, and make public transport more practical for daily trips. There is also a land-use question. New metro infrastructure can stimulate property development around stations, but without careful planning it can also increase congestion and pressure on existing utilities. Urban planners therefore stress the need to pair the corridor with walkable station areas, bus integration, drainage capacity and affordable housing.
The six-month DPR phase will provide the first meaningful test of the proposal. Its value will ultimately depend not on the number of kilometres announced, but on whether the final network connects established communities with jobs and regional transport systems while supporting more compact and lower-carbon urban growth.
