The Bhatsa Dam in Thane district has reached its full live storage capacity after sustained monsoon rainfall, prompting authorities to begin controlled water releases while significantly improving drinking water security across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The development strengthens water availability for millions of residents even as officials intensify downstream safety measures during the ongoing monsoon season. The Bhatsa Dam has achieved 100 per cent live storage capacity, marking a crucial milestone in Maharashtra’s monsoon replenishment cycle. As one of the largest reservoirs supplying potable water to Mumbai, Thane and Bhiwandi, the dam plays a central role in supporting domestic consumption, public health infrastructure and economic activity across the region. With reservoir levels now at capacity, authorities have initiated regulated spillway operations to safely manage continuing inflows from the catchment area.

Following established operational protocols, controlled discharge commenced after customary reservoir procedures were completed. Five spillway gates were opened, releasing water downstream at approximately 3,064 cusecs to maintain safe reservoir levels while protecting the structural integrity of the dam during periods of sustained rainfall. The filling of the Bhatsa Dam substantially improves regional water resilience ahead of the post-monsoon period. Urban planners emphasise that reservoir management is becoming increasingly complex as climate variability produces shorter but more intense rainfall events.
