Below-normal rainfall is likely to continue across Telangana until September 16, even as the India Meteorological Department forecasts thunderstorms and isolated heavy rain in parts of the State.

Telangana has moved into the deficient rainfall category after the southwest monsoon weakened, with the State recording a 23 per cent shortfall between June 1 and September 9, according to rainfall data cited by Telangana Today. The core Hyderabad region, including areas under the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation, Cyberabad and Malkajgiri municipalities, recorded a higher deficit of 26 per cent during the same period.
The IMD’s Hyderabad centre has issued an alert for thunderstorm activity over the next five days and forecast isolated heavy rainfall in Telangana on September 12 and 13. The forecast indicates that rainfall may occur in scattered locations, but does not point to a broad reversal of the State’s seasonal deficit.
The IMD’s New Delhi forecast said below-normal rainfall was likely to continue over Peninsular India through September 16. “There will be scattered rainfall with isolated heavy rainfall likely over Peninsular India during some days of this week. Overall, the rainfall is likely to be below normal during the week, up to September 16,” the forecast said.
Rainfall data from the Telangana Development Planning Society showed that the State received 485.9 mm between June 1 and September 9, against a normal of 629.4 mm for the period. The deficit widened after a dry spell during the first nine days of September, following a period in which most districts had maintained normal rainfall through August.
September has a normal rainfall figure of 167.1 mm for Telangana. However, the State received only 12 mm during the first nine days of the month, representing a 78 per cent shortfall for that period, according to the data cited in the report.
Nineteen of Telangana’s 33 districts are now classified as having deficient rainfall, with shortfalls ranging from 20 per cent to 59 per cent. Hanumakonda recorded a seasonal deficit of 49 per cent, while Warangal and Jangaon recorded deficits of 48 per cent and 44 per cent respectively.
The rainfall shortfall has also been recorded across the capital region. The GHMC area received 374.1 mm between June 1 and September 9, compared with a normal rainfall figure of 505.9 mm, resulting in a 26 per cent deficit. The forecast for thunderstorms and isolated heavy rain provides a possibility of short-term rainfall in parts of the State, but the IMD’s broader assessment remains that rainfall will be below normal through September 16.
