Telangana Plans Solar Expansion Across Irrigation Assets

Telangana is exploring a large-scale expansion of renewable energy generation across its irrigation infrastructure, with plans to utilise reservoirs, canal networks and available land parcels to reduce the rising electricity costs associated with water supply and lift irrigation systems.

The initiative reflects a broader effort to integrate clean energy solutions into critical public infrastructure while improving the long-term financial sustainability of irrigation operations. State officials have directed departments to identify suitable locations where solar power projects can be developed alongside existing water infrastructure. Among the locations being considered are major reservoirs and irrigation assets that offer significant potential for renewable energy generation. Preliminary assessments suggest that even a limited utilisation of suitable land and water surfaces could support several thousand megawatts of solar capacity, creating a substantial source of clean electricity for public infrastructure.
