Tata Power and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) have signed an agreement to develop ₹250 crore of power infrastructure for BPCL’s Petro Resid Fluidized Catalytic Cracking Unit (PRFCCU) project at its Mumbai refinery, with the system expected to be completed in about 24 months.
Under the memorandum of understanding, Tata Power will provide 110 kV connectivity and design and develop the associated power infrastructure, according to an official release cited by The Hindu BusinessLine. The facilities will support the PRFCCU’s electricity requirement of 90 MW once the refinery project becomes operational.
The PRFCCU is part of BPCL’s ₹14,203-crore investment at its Mumbai refinery. The unit will have a processing capacity of 3 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA) and is intended to improve the recovery of higher-value products from refinery residues. BPCL and Tata Power described it as the first project of its kind being executed in India.
For Mumbai’s power network, the agreement adds a large industrial load in the Trombay area, one of the city’s important industrial zones. Tata Power said the additional infrastructure would strengthen its transmission network in the area and support rising electricity demand from large industrial consumers and other developments with concentrated power requirements.
The project also links a refinery expansion to wider transmission planning in eastern Mumbai. Tata Power plans to develop a 400 kV transmission facility at Trombay over the next five years as part of its broader strategy to strengthen the city’s power network. The proposed augmentation is expected to improve power evacuation capacity and support grid reliability for industrial and commercial consumers.
The 110 kV connectivity for BPCL is scheduled to be completed in approximately 24 months. The companies’ announcement did not provide a more specific commissioning date for the PRFCCU or disclose further details on the construction package, contracting structure or the exact route of the transmission connection.
