Tamil Nadu Rain Alert: Showers Likely Till November 3

Tamil Nadu faces a prolonged spell of moderate rain from October 28 to November 3, with the Chennai weather centre warning that Tiruvallur district could receive heavy rain on November 3 as a new low-pressure area is likely to develop over the Andaman Sea and adjoining areas within 24 hours.

The forecast was issued after a very severe cyclonic storm named Arnab crossed the Andhra Pradesh and Yanam coast between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam during the period between 2 am and 8 am on October 28. According to the weather centre’s bulletin, the system weakened while moving north-westwards and was located as a severe cyclonic storm over the central-western Bay of Bengal.

The system is expected to weaken further into a cyclonic storm during the next six hours, the bulletin said. Its movement and weakening form part of the wider weather system currently influencing conditions along the east coast, including Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal.

The bulletin also identified an atmospheric circulation over the southern Andaman Sea and adjoining areas. A low-pressure area could form over the same region within the next 24 hours. The weather centre did not state in the supplied bulletin that the developing system would directly cross the Tamil Nadu coast, but its formation is part of the forecast period during which rain is expected across the state.

Moderate rain is likely at one or two places in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal from October 28 until November 3. The forecast also covers parts of the Western Ghats, where one or two locations could receive light to moderate rain. The bulletin specifically identified Tiruvallur for possible heavy rain on November 3.

The forecast places northern Tamil Nadu, including the Chennai region’s wider weather zone, within a period of changing conditions following the Andhra Pradesh landfall. Tiruvallur’s separate heavy-rain warning makes district-level monitoring important as the state moves through the forecast window, although the bulletin supplied by Dinamalar does not provide rainfall quantities, wind-speed estimates or a city-specific warning for Chennai.

The weather centre’s update records a sequence of developments: the landfall of Arnab along the Andhra Pradesh and Yanam coast, its weakening over the Bay of Bengal, the expected further weakening of the storm, and the possible formation of a new low-pressure area over the Andaman Sea. These systems are being tracked alongside the rain forecast for Tamil Nadu and neighbouring Union Territories.

For residents and local administrations, the immediate confirmed information is the possibility of moderate rain across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal through November 3, together with the specific heavy-rain possibility in Tiruvallur on November 3. Further details on rainfall intensity, wind conditions and subsequent warnings will depend on later updates from the Chennai weather centre.
