Tamil Nadu Monsoon Preparedness Gets CM Vijay’s Emergency Push

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay has directed district collectors to strengthen emergency preparations and respond promptly to situations arising during the northeast monsoon, after reviewing rainfall preparedness at the State Emergency Operations Centre in Chennai on October 22.

The Chief Minister inspected the preparedness work at the centre in Chepauk and held a video conference with collectors from 18 districts for which the weather centre had issued heavy-rain warnings. The districts included Nilgiris, Dindigul, Coimbatore, Theni, Madurai, Virudhunagar, Tenkasi, Kanniyakumari and Tirunelveli.

During the review, Vijay told the collectors that precautionary measures should be taken to prevent loss of life during heavy rain and flooding. He also instructed officials to ensure appropriate safety arrangements in areas that could be affected by the monsoon.

The directions place district administrations at the centre of the state’s immediate response system. Collectors are responsible for coordinating district-level departments during emergencies, while the State Emergency Operations Centre provides a mechanism for monitoring conditions and communicating with local administrations.

Vijay also called for stronger coordination between all departments to deal with the effects of the seasonal rains. The instruction covers the need for departments involved in revenue administration, disaster management and local response operations to work together as rainfall conditions develop.

The Chief Minister asked the collectors to take effective action at the appropriate time based on the nature of the emergency. The emphasis on timely response comes as the northeast monsoon is bringing widespread rain across Tamil Nadu and heavy-rain alerts have been issued for multiple districts.

The review was attended by Revenue Minister Sengottaiyan, Chief Secretary Sai Kumar, Revenue Administration Commissioner Chandramohan, Revenue and Disaster Management Department Secretary Palanisamy and Commissioner Sivagnanam. The state government’s next operational steps will be carried out through district administrations and the departments responsible for monsoon preparedness and emergency response.
