Construction of mini TIDEL Parks in seven Tamil Nadu districts, including Tirunelveli and Virudhunagar, has reportedly remained stalled after foundation stones were laid, while a separate ₹400-crore TIDEL Park planned in Hosur is awaiting a work order, according to a report by Dinamalar.
The projects were planned as part of the state’s effort to create information technology employment beyond major cities. Under the programme, large TIDEL Park buildings are being developed in bigger urban centres, while mini TIDEL Park facilities measuring between 50,000 and 1 lakh square feet are planned in second- and third-tier cities.
Foundation stones were laid this year for mini TIDEL Parks in seven districts, including Nagercoil and Virudhunagar. However, months after the ceremonies, construction work had reportedly not begun. The delay has raised questions over whether the projects will proceed, the report said.
The report also identified a separate delay in Hosur, where the previous government had invited tenders for a five-lakh-square-foot TIDEL Park at an estimated cost of ₹400 crore. The project was intended to attract investments from information technology companies based in Karnataka. Although a company was selected through the tender process, a work order has not yet been issued.
A senior official from the industries department, quoted by Dinamalar, attributed the situation to a lack of funds with TIDEL Park Limited for constructing new TIDEL Park and mini TIDEL Park buildings. The official also said that, following the change in government, senior government officials had instructed contracting companies not to begin construction on mini TIDEL Park projects for which foundation stones had already been laid.
According to the official, the same reason had resulted in the selected company for the Hosur project not receiving its work order. Further action on the projects will be taken based on the government’s instructions in the coming days, the official said.
The reported delays affect a planned expansion of technology infrastructure into cities outside Tamil Nadu’s largest urban centres. For the districts covered by the mini TIDEL Park programme, the projects were intended to provide dedicated commercial space for information technology activity and support the creation of local employment opportunities. The report does not specify revised construction schedules, funding allocations or new deadlines for any of the projects.
The next step depends on the state government’s directions on funding and project execution. No fresh timeline for starting construction or issuing the Hosur work order was provided in the report.
