Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay has reportedly sought financial details for a possible free Diwali grocery package to be distributed through ration shops, according to a report by Dinamalar. The proposal has not been officially announced, and the report attributes the information to sources in the Secretariat.
The reported plan comes as prices of rice, pulses and other grocery items are rising in Tamil Nadu. Dinamalar said opposition parties have been criticising the government over the cost of living, describing the state as being at the top of the price-rise issue. The report did not provide specific retail price data or identify the commodities that would be included in the proposed package.
According to the report, the Chief Minister has asked the Finance Department to estimate the funds required for the distribution. The package, if approved, would reportedly be supplied through the state’s ration-shop network during the Diwali festival period.
Dinamalar also reported that some ministers had advised Vijay that a festival grocery package could provide relief to residents. On that basis, an announcement may be made, the report said, citing Secretariat sources. The report did not specify the number of beneficiary families, the proposed value of each package, the funding allocation or the distribution schedule.
A ration-shop distribution programme would place the state’s existing public distribution infrastructure at the centre of any such measure. Its implementation would depend on a formal government decision, budget approval, procurement arrangements and instructions to the distribution network. None of those details has been officially confirmed in the supplied report.
Until the Chief Minister’s Office, the Finance Department or the Civil Supplies and Consumer Protection Department issues a statement or order, the reported Diwali grocery package remains a proposal under consideration rather than an announced welfare scheme. The next verifiable milestone would be an official announcement setting out eligibility, package contents, funding and distribution dates.
