The Tambaram–Thiruvananthapuram special train service has been extended through October 29, giving passengers additional weekly rail connectivity between Chennai and Kerala during the coming weeks. Southern Railway has also opened reservations for the extended services.
The special train from Thiruvananthapuram to Tambaram will continue to operate on Wednesdays from September 23 through October 28. The corresponding service from Tambaram to Thiruvananthapuram will run on Thursdays from September 24 through October 29.
The extension allows passengers travelling between the Chennai metropolitan region and the Kerala capital to continue using a scheduled weekly service beyond its earlier operating period. The announcement is relevant to passengers planning journeys in advance because reservations for the extended trips have already begun.
The service links Tambaram, one of Chennai’s major suburban rail hubs, with Thiruvananthapuram. For passengers in southern Chennai and adjoining areas, the Tambaram departure provides a direct starting point without requiring a transfer to Chennai Egmore or another terminal. The service also provides a weekly option for passengers travelling from Kerala towards the Chennai region.
The extension comes as passengers continue to seek more regular long-distance rail capacity on routes connecting Tamil Nadu and Kerala. The source report said the special train has been operating successfully for more than six months, and passengers have requested that it be made a permanent service rather than continuing only as a special train.
The report also highlighted a separate weekly service between Chennai Egmore and Kanyakumari. The train leaves Egmore at 11:50 pm every Friday and reaches Kanyakumari at 1 pm the following day. In the return direction, it departs Kanyakumari at 11:25 pm on Sundays and reaches Egmore at 11:30 am the next morning. Passengers have similarly sought permanent status for this service.
For the Tambaram–Thiruvananthapuram route, the immediate operational decision is the extension of the Wednesday and Thursday services through late October. Southern Railway has stated that reservations for the extended trips are available, while passengers’ demand for permanent services remains under consideration.
