Tambaram Targets Flood Hotspots With Drain Network

Tambaram City Municipal Corporation has sought ₹111.08 crore to strengthen drainage across flood-prone neighbourhoods ahead of the Northeast monsoon. The proposed works cover 30.37 km across 40 locations, highlighting a wider infrastructure gap: drainage capacity has not kept pace with dense development and shrinking natural water pathways.

The proposal covers areas including Goodwill Nagar, Samathuva Periyar Nagar, Judge Colony and parts of Chitlapakkam. These neighbourhoods have repeatedly faced waterlogging during heavy rainfall, affecting homes, streets, local businesses and daily travel. The corporation has divided the proposed programme into two stages. The first comprises 25 works extending 23.1 km, with an estimated cost of ₹95.51 crore. A second package includes 15 works covering another 7.27 km and costing ₹15.57 crore.

The scale of the proposal points to a familiar challenge across Chennai’s expanding southern suburbs. New roads, housing and commercial development have increased the amount of hard surface, reducing the land available for rainwater to soak into the ground. At the same time, disconnected drains and disrupted waterways can leave rainwater with limited routes to reach larger water bodies. Officials said the locations were identified through field assessments and flood mapping conducted during previous monsoons. The proposed network is intended to improve drainage connectivity and provide clearer routes towards major outfalls.However, stormwater drain construction alone may not resolve Tambaram’s flooding problem. Urban planners note that drainage performance depends on gradient, capacity, maintenance and connections with downstream channels. A technically sound drain can still fail if it ends at a blocked waterway or cannot discharge during intense rainfall.

The corporation has already completed around 15 km of drainage works under the State Disaster Response Fund, involving ₹37.59 crore. Concerns over construction quality and inadequate gradients have nevertheless raised questions about whether future spending should prioritise network integration and supervision alongside new infrastructure.Urban experts also argue that restoring natural drainage channels could reduce pressure on engineered systems. Removing obstructions, protecting watercourses and improving links between drains, lakes and other retention areas can help cities manage rainfall while supporting groundwater recharge and reducing flood risks. For residents, the immediate test will be whether the proposed stormwater drain network works as one connected system rather than a collection of isolated projects. With the monsoon approaching, timely approval matters, but so do construction quality, maintenance and protection of the natural systems that ultimately carry Chennai’s rainwater.
