Supreme Court stops demolitions in Chandni Chowk

Supreme Court has stayed the demolition of residential and commercial properties in the Fatehpuri area.

This action follows the presentation of photographic evidence indicating ongoing illegal construction activities, raising alarms over the Municipal Corporation of Delhi’s (MCD) oversight. The bench, comprising Justices Surya Kant and N. Kotiswar Singh, expressed concern over the MCD’s failure to prevent unauthorized constructions, despite prior awareness. The court emphasized the importance of preserving the area’s heritage and directed the MCD to submit a comprehensive status report detailing measures taken to address illegal constructions.

During the proceedings, the MCD’s counsel acknowledged that a team had inspected the area and claimed that all illegal constructions had been removed. However, the report was not filed due to public holidays, a justification met with skepticism by the bench. The court has scheduled the next hearing for May 23, 2025, and has requested the petitioner to suggest independent architects and civil engineers for an impartial site inspection. This development underscores the judiciary’s commitment to preserving Delhi’s historical sites and ensuring accountability in urban development.
