ST Telemedia Global Data Centres (STT GDC India) has announced the launch of a state-of-the-art AI-ready data centre in Kolkata. The facility, strategically located in the city’s New Town.
Is set to bolster AI-driven initiatives across Eastern India. Expected to go live in the second quarter of 2025, the new campus will play a pivotal role in supporting startups and enterprises alike, enabling them to develop and deploy AI solutions efficiently.The facility spans a massive 5.59 acres and is designed with the future of AI in mind. It is equipped with advanced cooling systems, high-density rack configurations, and a modular design that allows for scalability, a crucial feature as the demand for AI infrastructure continues to rise. With a total IT power capacity of 10 MW, the campus aims to support high-performance computing workloads that are fundamental to AI development. The initial building of the facility will offer 5-6 MW of IT power and is set to incorporate advanced power architecture featuring an N+2C design for ensuring uninterrupted power supply, a significant factor in data centre operations.
The new data centre has received the TIA-942 Rated-3 Design certification, a testament to its commitment to world-class infrastructure and reliability. The centre’s design ensures zero single points of failure (SPOF), enhancing the dependability of the facility. Its flexibility also extends to the integration of liquid cooling technologies, which are crucial formanaging the intense power demands of AI workloads. This marks a major step forward in the development of AI infrastructure in India, particularly in Eastern India, which has witnessed a surge in tech-based innovation in recent years.One of the standout features of the Kolkata facility is its focus on sustainability. The design incorporates a low Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) cooling system, which is crucial for energy efficiency. Water conservation methods such as closed-loop cooling, rainwater harvesting, and greywater reuse will also be implemented, underscoring the company’s commitment to reducing its environmental footprint.
Furthermore, low Global Warming Potential (GWP) refrigerants will be used to help minimize the facility’s carbon emissions.Bimal Khandelwal, CEO of STT GDC India, emphasised the importance of this expansion in accelerating AI innovation, particularly in Eastern India. He highlighted the significance of the Kolkata campus in enabling the region’s growing AI ecosystem, which includes everything from regional language AI models to large-scale machine learning applications. The facility is poised to empower businesses, hyperscale cloud service providers, and government organisations to scale their AI capabilities, with high-performance computing and low-latency connectivity at its core.
The launch of the Kolkata data centre is part of STT GDC India’s broader expansion strategy, which aims to extend its nationwide footprint. The company currently operates 30 data centres across 10 cities, with a total IT load capacity of 390 MW.
