Swedish steel producer, SSAB, has announced the launch of SSAB Zero™, a carbon-free steel that is made with recycled steel and produced using fossil-free energy. The new product is part of SSAB’s efforts to provide low-emissions steels and reduce environmental impact. The company has stated that the quality and properties of SSAB Zero™ will be equal to that of its conventional steel.
“By further enhancing steelmaking processes, we will provide a comprehensive offering with zero emissions while reducing the impact on the planet,” said Martin Lindqvist, SSAB’s President and CEO. “It is particularly pleasing that we have signed an agreement for SSAB Zero™ with Volvo Group already at launch.”
The goal is to deliver 40kt of SSAB Zero™ to the market in 2023, to ramp up to around 100kt in 2025. The new product has received positive feedback from customers, including Volvo Group, which has signed an agreement to use SSAB Zero™ in its products.
“We are making big strides forward with introducing low-emission materials made from recycled steel with SSAB Zero™ in our products,” said Martin Lundstedt, President and CEO of Volvo Group. “In parallel with the already introduced fossil-free steel, it is another step towards fully climate-neutral transport solutions, and our partnership with SSAB is accelerating this ramp-up.” SSAB Zero™ is the latest addition to SSAB’s growing portfolio of low-emission steels. The company is committed to becoming fossil-free by 2045 and has invested heavily in developing new technologies and processes to reduce emissions.
“We are proud to already today be able to strengthen our portfolio with SSAB Zero™, as we see increasing customer demand for steels with low emissions,” Lindqvist added. The launch of SSAB Zero™ is a significant step forward in the steel industry’s efforts to reduce its environmental impact and provide sustainable solutions. With its commitment to using recycled steel and fossil-free energy, SSAB is leading the way in producing low-emission steels.
