Solapur Garbage Issue Leaves Vinayak Lodge Road Unsafe for Pedestrians

The Solapur garbage issue has turned the road behind Vinayak Lodge into an unsafe and unhygienic route, with accumulated waste, foul odour and the reported presence of people consuming alcohol causing residents and traders to avoid the road, according to a report by Sakal – Pune published on November 4.

The road, located in Solapur city, is being used as an informal dumping area, the report said. Waste has accumulated along the route, while public urination and persistent dirt have further worsened conditions. The resulting smell and unhygienic surroundings have raised concerns about the health of people living and working in the area.

The problem is not limited to sanitation. Sakal reported that people frequently leave a nearby drinking establishment and remain in the area during the day. Their presence has made women, senior citizens and other pedestrians feel unsafe while using the road. Residents have consequently begun avoiding the route despite its convenience.

The road’s condition highlights how a public right of way can lose its civic function when waste collection, enforcement and street-level monitoring do not operate together. In this case, residents have raised concerns about both municipal sanitation and public safety, rather than treating the garbage as an isolated cleaning failure.

According to the report, local residents and traders are dissatisfied with what they describe as the absence of effective action by the Solapur Municipal Corporation and the police administration. The report did not cite a response from either authority to the allegations or specify whether any formal inspection, enforcement action or scheduled cleaning plan had been announced.

Residents have called on the municipal commissioner to inspect the area and establish regular cleaning and waste-lifting arrangements. They have also sought steps to prevent recurring dumping and other forms of public nuisance. The police administration has been asked to monitor the movement of people consuming alcohol in the area and take action under applicable law.

The report also carries a warning from residents that a one-time cleaning exercise would not resolve the problem. Their demand is for continuing waste collection, measures to stop the road from being used as a dumping spot and police attention to the safety concerns reported by pedestrians. No timeline for these actions was provided in the report.
