Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) has secured five-star ratings for five coal mines for 2024–25, with the Ministry of Coal recognising their performance in mine management, safety, environmental practices, production technology and worker welfare.
The awards were presented at a ceremony in Raipur, Chhattisgarh, on Monday by Union minister of state for Coal and Mines Satish Chandra Dubey to SCCL chairman and managing director Buddhaprakash Jyoti. The recognition covers mines located across SCCL’s Srirampur, Sattupalli, Bellampalli and Ramagundam-3 areas.
The five mines receiving the rating are RKNT and RK-6 Incline in the Srirampur Area, JVR OC-2 in the Sattupalli Area, Khairigura OC in the Bellampalli Area and RGOC-1 in the Ramagundam-3 Area. The company said the awards reflected its adoption of best mining practices, environment-friendly measures and facilities supporting workers.
The Ministry of Coal evaluates mines across the country each year through an assessment covering 84 parameters. These include mine performance, safety measures, management systems, facilities, environmental practices and worker welfare. The evaluation process involves on-site inspections by ministry teams, followed by a preliminary assessment and further scrutiny by a committee that selects the top-performing mines.
Mines scoring above 91 out of 100 receive a five-star rating under the assessment system. SCCL said its five recognised mines met the required standards through their mine management practices, environmental initiatives, welfare programmes and production technology.
The rating system places operational performance alongside safety, environmental management and worker facilities. That combination is significant for coal-producing areas, where mines function not only as industrial sites but also as major local employers and infrastructure-linked economic centres. The award, however, reflects the ministry’s assessment of the selected mines and does not by itself establish that the same standards apply uniformly across all SCCL operations.
SCCL chairman and managing director Buddhaprakash Jyoti congratulated the mine managements and workers following the awards. He urged them to continue their work and seek further recognition for the company’s mines.
Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka also congratulated SCCL’s officers, employees and staff. He called for the same performance to be maintained and encouraged the company to help more mines secure five-star ratings in the coming years.
The latest recognition adds five SCCL mines to the Ministry of Coal’s annual performance assessment framework for 2024–25. The next stage for the company, according to the statements cited in the announcement, is to maintain the standards recognised in the assessment and improve the performance of additional mines.
