Sigenergy Plans $250 Million India Push for Energy Storage Plants

Sigenergy plans to invest an initial $250 million in India to establish manufacturing facilities for inverters and battery energy storage systems, as the country expands infrastructure to support rising renewable-energy capacity.

The Chinese energy storage systems maker will first develop an inverter manufacturing plant, which is expected to become operational by the second quarter of 2027, Rahul Morde, head of sales for Sigenergy India, told Reuters. The company is currently exploring possible locations for the facility.

Sigenergy began operations in India earlier this year. After the inverter plant, it plans to establish a battery energy storage systems factory that is expected to come online six to eight months later, Morde said on the sidelines of the Renewable Energy India Expo.

The proposed facilities would give the company a local manufacturing base for equipment used to convert and manage electricity generated from renewable sources. Inverters are essential to connecting solar and other renewable-energy systems with electrical networks, while battery storage can help manage supply when renewable generation fluctuates.

Sigenergy also plans to establish a research and development centre in India focused on battery energy storage systems, according to Morde. The company has complied with India’s requirements for storing data within the country and is seeking investment clearances, he said.

India is rapidly expanding renewable-energy capacity and grid-scale energy storage as it works towards its clean-energy goals. That expansion is creating demand for equipment manufacturers as utilities and energy companies seek systems that can store electricity and support grid management.

Sigenergy develops and manufactures energy storage systems for residential and commercial customers. Its product portfolio includes batteries, inverters and energy management software. The company’s proposed Indian operations would therefore cover both physical equipment manufacturing and related energy-management capabilities.

The investment plan comes after Sigenergy debuted on the Hong Kong stock market in April. The company raised HK$4.4 billion, or $562 million, through its initial public offering. The Indian manufacturing and research plans remain subject to the company securing locations and the required investment clearances.

The next stated milestone is the proposed commissioning of the inverter plant by the second quarter of 2027, followed by the battery energy storage facility six to eight months later.
