Three members of a family were killed and a seven-year-old girl was injured when their car collided head-on with a passenger bus near Behra turn in Amarpur village of Madhya Pradesh’s Sidhi district on Friday afternoon, police said. The child was the only survivor among the four occupants of the car.
The collision occurred at around 2 pm as the car was travelling towards Rampur Naikin and the bus was heading towards Churhat, according to Churhat police station in-charge Rita Tripathi. The impact severely crushed the car and damaged the front portion of the bus.
The deceased were identified as Anil Tiwari, 35, his wife Manorama Tiwari, 30, and Sudhir Tiwari, 32. All three were residents of Devra village in Maihar district. Manorama Tiwari was the child’s mother, while Sudhir Tiwari was her uncle, police said.
The seven-year-old, identified as Rani Tiwari, was trapped inside the mangled car after the crash. People at the site alerted Dial 112 and an ambulance, following which rescuers pulled the girl from the wreckage and took her to hospital.
Police said the girl sustained serious injuries and was referred to Rewa for further medical care. She was later discharged after receiving primary treatment, according to the police statement reported by The Times of India.
Tripathi said the collision took place when the two vehicles were travelling in opposite directions. “It was around 2 pm when the car which had four people inside it was going towards Rampur Naikin side and bus was coming towards Churhat when both the vehicles collided head on,” she told TOI.
The police officer confirmed that the three adults died at the scene and that the child was the only passenger to survive. “Even her mother Manorama Tiwari died on the spot, along with her two uncles,” Tripathi said.
The crash has brought emergency response and road safety into focus at a stretch where the force of the impact left both vehicles badly damaged. The account supplied by police does not establish whether speeding, visibility, road conditions, driver error or any other factor contributed to the collision.
Churhat police have registered a case and begun investigating the circumstances that led to the head-on crash. Further details will depend on the investigation and the evidence collected from the scene.
