A power outage at Seawoods railway station in Navi Mumbai left passengers navigating platforms and exit routes in darkness for around 15 to 20 minutes on Monday afternoon, with several commuters using mobile phone torches to find their way out.
The power supply stopped at around 1.45 pm while passengers were moving through the station. The outage affected lighting on the platforms as well as the routes leading towards the station entrance and exit, according to a report by Loksatta – Navi Mumbai.
Passengers leaving the station switched on their mobile phone torches to see the way through the darkened areas. The interruption caused inconvenience to commuters travelling through the station during the afternoon period, when regular passenger movement was under way.
Seawoods station manager Rajesh Kumaran said the power supply had been switched off because railway work was in progress. He said electricity would be restored shortly and indicated that the interruption was not expected to continue for a long period.
The temporary loss of lighting particularly affected senior citizens, women and passengers carrying luggage, who had to move through the station and towards its exits with limited visibility. The report said commuters faced difficulty while leaving the platforms and using the access and exit routes.
Railway administration officials said the lighting system would return to normal after the power supply was restored. The incident highlights the immediate operational challenge of maintaining passenger movement and visibility when electrical work is carried out in an active railway station.
