A roof slab collapsed at an under-construction house in Sikri Kala, in Ghaziabad’s Modinagar locality, killing one labourer and injuring five others, officials said. The incident took place on Saturday, prompting a rescue operation involving Modinagar police, emergency-response forces and local residents.
The deceased was identified as Gauri Shankar alias Chhotu, 32. He was buried under the rubble after the slab gave way and died in the incident, according to officials.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Rural) Surendra Nath Tiwari said one person had died and five others were rescued from the construction site. Police and emergency-response teams joined the rescue operation shortly after the collapse, while local residents assisted during the initial relief efforts.
The collapse occurred at a house that was still under construction. The incident has brought scrutiny to the nature of the construction and the conditions at the site. The owner of the structure, identified as Surendra, is being interrogated by police, the DCP said.
The available information does not specify the cause of the slab failure, the construction stage at which the collapse occurred or whether the site had received the required approvals. These details are expected to form part of the police inquiry into the incident.
Construction-site accidents involving structural failures can affect workers as well as people living or passing near unfinished buildings. In this case, the immediate rescue response included both official teams and residents who helped with the initial relief work.
Police are continuing to question the property owner about the construction and the circumstances that led to the collapse. Further details will depend on the findings of the ongoing inquiry.
