Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the Reserve Bank of India’s greenfield data centre and Enterprise Computing & Cybersecurity Training Institute at Info Valley-II near Bhubaneswar on October 25, a facility designed to strengthen disaster recovery and protect the continuity of key financial systems.
The announcement followed a preparatory meeting chaired by Odisha chief secretary Anu Garg to review arrangements for the Prime Minister’s visit and President Droupadi Murmu’s scheduled programmes in the state. The RBI facility is spread across 18.55 acres and combines data management, enterprise computing and cybersecurity capabilities on one campus.
The data centre will serve as a critical backup to the RBI’s primary data centre in Navi Mumbai. According to the report, the facility is intended to ensure uninterrupted functioning of key financial systems by providing additional capacity for business continuity and disaster recovery.
The project’s foundation stone was laid by then RBI governor Shaktikanta Das on March 22, 2023. At the time, Das had highlighted the expanding role of technology in central banking and the need to enlarge the RBI’s computing infrastructure and research capabilities in enterprise computing, cybersecurity and other digital technology domains.
The selection of Bhubaneswar was linked to the site’s strategic location. The facility is away from high-risk border zones and seismically sensitive regions, reducing its exposure to geopolitical and natural disaster risks, the report said. Its location is therefore part of the RBI’s approach to building redundancy into infrastructure supporting the country’s financial systems.
The data centre has been built to global reliability standards and includes fault-tolerant architecture and multiple layers of redundancy. These features are intended to reduce the risk that a single equipment failure or local disruption could affect the availability of critical systems.
The adjoining Enterprise Computing & Cybersecurity Training Institute will focus on research, capacity building and skill development in emerging technology areas. Its inclusion in the campus indicates that the project is not limited to physical backup infrastructure, but also includes institutional capacity for managing and securing increasingly technology-dependent central banking operations.
The inauguration comes as financial institutions rely on digital systems for data management, payments, supervision and other core functions. While the report does not provide the centre’s capacity, investment or operationalisation timeline, it identifies the Bhubaneswar facility as part of the RBI’s broader strategy to safeguard financial infrastructure and strengthen business continuity.
The inauguration is scheduled for October 25. President Murmu is scheduled to visit Odisha on October 28 and 29 for programmes in Mayurbhanj and Rairangpur, including visits linked to health, education, skill development and civic projects.
