Ranchi Food Safety Raids Expose Hygiene and Licence Violations

Food safety raids across Ranchi district have uncovered poor hygiene, improper labelling, invalid licences and suspected substandard paneer at more than 150 establishments inspected over the past month. Officials collected samples for laboratory testing, imposed fines on vendors and used mobile food-testing laboratories in Kanke and Lalpur as part of festive-season enforcement.

The inspections covered all seven zones of the district, including Bundu. Food safety officers examined hotels, restaurants, street-food kitchens, retail outlets and market stalls. The violations recorded included missing or invalid food licences, inadequate kitchen hygiene and labelling that did not comply with prescribed requirements.

In Kanke, officials found major violations involving food labels and hygiene conditions in hotel, restaurant and street-food kitchens. Paneer samples were also collected after officials raised concerns about their quality. “In Kanke, major violations included improper labelling, poor hygiene in hotel, restaurant and street food kitchens, and the absence of valid food licences. Paneer samples were also sent for testing on suspicion,” food safety officer Manoj Kumar said.

The Lalpur zone, which includes Kokar, Morabadi and Lalpur, accounted for more than 65 inspections. Officials sent over 25 samples, including masala powders, paneer, cooking oil, sweets and ice creams, to the laboratory for analysis. Three laboratory reports have been received so far, and one paneer sample collected from a local retail shop failed to meet prescribed standards.

“Further action will be taken based on the findings,” food safety officer Pawan Kumar said. The available laboratory results do not yet represent the entire district-wide inspection exercise, as testing of the remaining samples is pending.

At the Morabadi vendor market, officials inspected 40 stalls and tested 22 samples. Two paneer samples failed quality checks, while industrial colouring agents were detected in two chaat samples. At least 25 vendors were fined Rs 500 each during the inspection.

Officials also deployed the mobile food testing laboratory in Kanke and Lalpur. Of the 60 samples examined on the spot, 10 failed preliminary checks against Food Safety and Standards Authority of India parameters. These preliminary results are separate from the laboratory reports still awaited for samples sent for detailed analysis.

The inspections highlight the enforcement challenge created by Ranchi’s diverse food network, which includes formal establishments, retail shops and temporary market vendors. The findings also show that compliance involves more than food quality alone: licensing, labelling and kitchen conditions were among the issues identified by officials.

A consolidated district-wide figure for the total number of inspections, samples collected, laboratory results and fines has not yet been released. Further action will depend on the pending laboratory reports, according to the food safety authorities.
