Rajasthan Government Seizes Vehicles in Mining Raids
The Rajasthan government has launched a series of surprise raids across several key regions of the state, including Udaipur and Bharatpur, in an effort to curb unlawful practices that harm the environment and deplete the state’s natural resources. According to officials, the Mines Department’s latest action has resulted in the seizure of over 50 vehicles and heavy machinery used in illegal mining operations. Seven First Information Reports (FIRs) have been filed, and the seized equipment and vehicles have been handed over to various police stations in Udaipur, Jaipur, Bharatpur, Baran, Nagaur, Gharsana, and Suratgarh.
The raids, conducted over the course of several days, targeted some of the most notorious hotspots for illegal mining activities. In Udaipur, authorities took decisive action, registering one case of illegal mining, 17 instances of illegal transportation, and several violations of illegal mineral storage. The operation resulted in the confiscation of over 849 tonnes of minerals, valued at several lakhs, with fines amounting to Rs 4.23 lakh. The scale of the operation in Udaipur indicates the seriousness with which the Mines Department is approaching this issue. Authorities emphasise that the confiscated minerals and the penalties imposed are just the beginning of a larger strategy to address the root causes of illegal mining in Rajasthan. In Jaipur, the crackdown was particularly focused on the illegal transportation of minerals. A total of 22 vehicles were seized, including four JCBs, nine tractors, and nine dumpers, all involved in transporting minerals illegally extracted from the state’s vast mining regions. Additionally, 14 cases were filed, resulting in fines of Rs 2.2 lakh. The surprise raids in the Bikaner zone also led to the seizure of 16 overloaded vehicles, further highlighting the widespread nature of illegal mining and transportation activities across Rajasthan. The state government’s recent actions are seen as part of a larger, more comprehensive effort to tackle illegal mining, which has long been a significant challenge for the state.
