India’s renewable energy landscape continues to evolve with another large-scale commitment to clean power. NLC India Ltd, through its renewables subsidiary, has inked a crucial agreement with the Rajasthan state utility for an 810 MW solar power project to be developed in Bikaner.
This marks one of the country’s more ambitious utility-scale solar undertakings in recent years and reflects a strategic alignment with national climate targets and energy transition goals. The project was awarded under a competitive tariff-based bidding process, underscoring the growing role of market mechanisms in renewable energy procurement. The Bikaner district, long favoured for its high solar irradiance and arid terrain, has emerged as a preferred destination for photovoltaic investments. With this agreement, NLC India is poised to deepen its renewable portfolio while supporting Rajasthan in enhancing its energy resilience.
Once commissioned, the project is expected to generate nearly 2 billion units of electricity annually. This translates into a reduction of about 1.5 million metric tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year, positioning it as a significant contributor to India’s decarbonisation journey. The generated power will feed into the state grid, reinforcing Rajasthan’s renewable energy obligations and its contribution to the central government’s target of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel-based power capacity by 2030. This development arrives at a time when state-run utilities are under increasing pressure to modernise and shift towards low-emission energy models. For Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Ltd, the collaboration with a central public sector enterprise reflects an evolving synergy between state and central entities to meet ambitious sustainability benchmarks. It also highlights how institutional partnerships are critical for unlocking large-scale clean energy investments in India’s federal setup.
Beyond energy output, the Bikaner project is likely to generate significant employment during its construction and operational phases. It may also catalyse local economic development by creating ancillary infrastructure and encouraging private sector participation in the region’s solar ecosystem. India’s solar mission has, over the past decade, witnessed a consistent policy push—from accelerated bidding processes to concessional financing and the introduction of green open access regulations. Rajasthan, owing to its favourable land availability and policy backing, has played a pivotal role in that growth trajectory. The latest power purchase agreement adds to the state’s momentum and demonstrates its resolve to transition into a clean energy hub.
At its core, the deal is not merely about megawatts but about how Indian power generation is adapting to the global climate imperative.
