Indian Railways has given the green light for a crucial final location survey (FLS) for a proposed new railway line in the picturesque state of Sikkim, a development poised to significantly enhance connectivity to its southern and western regions.

The planned 75-kilometre route will strategically link Melli to Dentam, traversing through key towns such as Jorethang and Legship. This initiative, sanctioned by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw at an estimated cost of ₹2.25 crore, comes as a direct response to a long-standing demand and a compelling proposal put forth by Sikkim’s Lok Sabha MP, Dr Indra Hang Subba. The primary objective of this ambitious railway project is to integrate the hitherto underserved southern and western parts of Sikkim into the national railway grid, fostering greater economic and social inclusion. Melli, already recognised as a vital gateway to South and West Sikkim, is envisioned as the central junction point for this new line. This strategic positioning will ensure a seamless and efficient connection between Sikkim’s remote hinterlands and the extensive national rail network, promising to unlock new avenues for trade, tourism, and overall regional development.

The proposed railway line to Dentam, a remote town situated near the Indo-Nepal border at Chiwabhanjyang, is envisioned as a significant extension of the ongoing Sivok–Rangpo railway project, which is anticipated to become operational by 2027. This synergistic approach leverages existing infrastructure development to further expand rail connectivity within the state, creating a more comprehensive and integrated transportation network.
