The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) is advancing an ambitious infrastructure project aimed at alleviating the city’s escalating traffic congestion. The construction of a 1.7 km double-decker flyover, extending from Savitribai Phule Pune University Chowk to the E-square junction, is poised to significantly enhance connectivity for the third Metro line.
An official from the PMRDA confirmed that the project is on schedule to be completed by the end of this year. Mhase, overseeing the progress of the third Metro line, recently met with Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar to review the project’s status. Mhase assured that the construction work is being meticulously monitored to adhere to the agreed timeline. Developed under a public-private partnership (PPP) model, the double-decker flyover sees PMRDA as the leading agency. Chief Engineer Rinaj Pathan disclosed that two additional launching girders have been deployed at the SSPU flyover to expedite the construction, including the ramp construction.
Despite the ongoing construction, commuters in the area have expressed their frustration over the persistent traffic congestion, especially during peak hours. Reema Kale, a regular commuter between the city and the IT hub, voiced concerns about the lack of alternative routes or arrangements when the main roads are closed for construction. “Despite having alternative routes, the heavy traffic in the area continues to cause inconvenience to commuters,” official added. Once operational, this innovative infrastructure development is expected to significantly improve traffic flow and connectivity in the region. The double-decker flyover is anticipated to provide much-needed relief to the city’s residents and visitors, streamlining the daily commute and reducing travel time. The flyover is a critical component of the city’s broader efforts to modernise its infrastructure and accommodate its growing population. As Pune continues to expand, the need for effective and efficient transportation solutions becomes increasingly pressing. The PMRDA’s commitment to completing this project on time reflects the city’s dedication to addressing these challenges and enhancing the quality of life for its residents.
With the year-end completion target in sight, the double-decker flyover stands as a testament to Pune’s forward-thinking approach to urban development. The successful implementation of this project will not only improve traffic conditions but also set a precedent for future infrastructure initiatives in the region.
