Pune Water Supply Halt Affects Eastern Neighbourhoods

Pune: Water supply across several neighbourhoods in eastern Pune will be temporarily suspended on July 23 as the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) undertakes critical upgrades to its transmission network and carries out maintenance at a key water treatment facility. The planned shutdown is expected to affect thousands of households and institutions, highlighting the importance of maintaining ageing urban water infrastructure while ensuring long-term service reliability.

According to civic officials, regular water supply will remain suspended throughout the day in the affected areas, with consumers likely to receive delayed and low-pressure supply once services resume the following day. The interruption forms part of scheduled engineering works involving the relocation of a major transmission pipeline and maintenance operations at the Holkar Water Treatment Plant. The primary infrastructure work involves shifting a trunk pipeline near Bhakti Shakti Chowk in Nigdi to accommodate ongoing developments within the adjoining municipal jurisdiction. Simultaneously, maintenance at the treatment plant is intended to improve operational efficiency and strengthen the resilience of Pune’s water supply network, which serves a rapidly expanding urban population.

Neighbourhoods under the Bund Garden Water Supply Division expected to experience disruption include parts of Bopkhel, Vishrantwadi, Kalas, Kharadi, Airport Road, Sanjay Park, Ahilyanagar, Manik Nagar, Bharat Nagar, Shantinagar and several adjoining residential colonies and housing societies. Water supply will also be affected in areas served by the Chatushrungi Water Supply Division, including Khadki Cantonment, the Ammunition Factory precinct, the Mula Road corridor and nearby settlements. Urban infrastructure experts note that planned maintenance shutdowns, although inconvenient for residents, are essential for improving network performance and reducing the frequency of emergency failures. Timely replacement or relocation of ageing pipelines can minimise water losses, prevent pipeline bursts and improve the efficiency of distribution systems as cities continue to expand. The temporary disruption also underscores the broader challenge of balancing infrastructure renewal with uninterrupted public service delivery. As Pune experiences sustained residential growth and increased water demand, investment in resilient utility systems has become critical for supporting equitable urban development. Modernising transmission pipelines and treatment facilities not only improves operational reliability but also contributes to more sustainable management of finite water resources.

Officials have advised residents in affected localities to store adequate water in advance and use available supplies judiciously during the shutdown period. Civic authorities are expected to restore normal operations after the completion of the scheduled works, though supply may remain weak in some areas while pressure across the water supply network stabilises. As Pune continues upgrading its essential infrastructure, coordinated maintenance planning and timely public communication will remain important for reducing inconvenience while strengthening the city’s long-term water security.
