Pune Municipal Corporation will completely shut off water supply across the city for one day every week from Thursday, October 15, 2026, after the state government ordered a 10% reduction in water supply amid drought conditions. The decision was announced by PMC Additional Commissioner Pavneet Kaur.
The weekly shutdown is intended to help the civic administration plan and conserve the available water stock in accordance with directions from the Irrigation Department. Residents will therefore face a full day without municipal water supply every week until further details are issued by the administration.
PMC has not yet announced which parts of the city will face the shutdown on which day. The civic administration is expected to release a ward-wise or area-wise schedule shortly. The timetable will be important for households, housing societies, commercial establishments and institutions that depend on the municipal network for routine water use.
The decision follows the state government’s direction to reduce water supply by 10%. According to the information released by PMC, the administration is implementing the measure to ensure appropriate planning and economical use of the water available to the city. The announcement does not specify how long the weekly shutdown will remain in force.
Residents have been asked to store the water they need in advance and avoid wastage. The advisory places particular importance on household-level planning because the complete shutdown will affect the regular availability of piped water on the designated day each week.
For Pune’s municipal water system, the immediate operational issue will be communicating the shutdown schedule clearly and giving residents enough notice to prepare. The impact will also depend on how the weekly closure is distributed across the city and whether supply timings change on the days before or after the shutdown.
The administration’s announcement comes as the city is required to manage its available water stock under the state’s broader restriction. The Irrigation Department’s directions form the stated basis for the conservation measure, while PMC will be responsible for publishing the local implementation schedule and informing residents about the affected areas.
Residents should await the official area-wise timetable before making arrangements for a specific day. PMC has said that the detailed schedule will be announced soon, while continuing to appeal to citizens to use water carefully and prevent wastage.
