Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has said the state is working to make Pune the country’s fastest-transport city within the next three to four years, citing a package of road, metro and public transport projects intended to address the city’s worsening congestion.
Speaking at the foundation-laying ceremony for the new Bajaj Finserv headquarters in Pune, Fadnavis said infrastructure work was already under way on several projects, including an outer ring road, an inner ring road, underground routes and high-capacity express corridors. He said work on some projects had started, while efforts were being made to accelerate the remaining works.
The chief minister also pointed to the expansion of Pune’s metro network and plans to strengthen the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited, or PMPML, as part of the proposed transport system. He said the combined infrastructure would help Pune achieve the transport target over the next three to four years.
The announcement comes as traffic congestion continues to draw criticism of Pune’s local administration and the state government. Fadnavis did not provide project-wise completion dates, cost estimates or detailed funding arrangements in the remarks reported by Loksatta. The announcement also did not specify the exact alignments or capacity of the proposed underground and high-capacity routes.
Fadnavis made the remarks in the presence of Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar, Pune Mayor Manjusha Nagpure, Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram, District Collector Jitendra Dudi and representatives of the Bajaj group, among other officials and company executives.
The chief minister was speaking at an event connected to the proposed Bajaj Finserv headquarters, which is expected to accommodate about 40,000 employees. He said a road connecting the headquarters to the Mundhwa area and an additional bridge would be built before the headquarters project is completed. The statement did not identify the agencies responsible for executing the road and bridge works or provide their construction schedules.
The proposed office development is also expected to include associated facilities that Fadnavis described as sustainable and significant at the national level. The Bajaj group has expressed an intention to establish an arts and cultural centre in Pune, which the chief minister said would be developed with the cooperation of the municipal corporation and other stakeholders.
Fadnavis also used the event to discuss Maharashtra’s position in the financial technology sector. He said Mumbai and Pune were leading India’s fintech ecosystem and that the state government had prepared a special policy to strengthen its position in financial transactions, banking, insurance and digital lending. He said fintech activity should also expand to Nashik, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Nagpur.
For Pune’s transport system, the next stages will depend on the project-level details, implementation agencies and timelines for the announced road, metro and public transport works. The government’s stated target is to complete the broader transport transformation within three to four years.
