Pune Transport Network Gains Major Infrastructure Push

Pune: Maharashtra is advancing a coordinated package of transport infrastructure projects across Pune aimed at easing congestion, improving regional connectivity and supporting long-term urban growth. The programme combines elevated corridors, ring roads and a high-capacity public transport route into an integrated mobility framework designed to strengthen the city’s transport network while accommodating rising travel demand.

The infrastructure plan includes three elevated road corridors connecting Pune with Shirur, Hadapsar–Yavat and the Talegaon–Chakan–Shikrapur industrial belt. Together with the proposed Outer Ring Road and the High Capacity Mass Transit Route (HCMTR), these projects are intended to reduce travel delays across major commuter and freight corridors while improving access to expanding residential and industrial zones. The Pune Integrated Transport Plan reflects a shift towards multimodal infrastructure planning rather than isolated road expansion. Urban transport specialists note that combining highways, metro corridors and ring roads within a single planning framework can improve mobility efficiency, reduce duplication of infrastructure and support better land-use management as metropolitan regions continue to expand. Officials expect the elevated corridors to improve connectivity to manufacturing clusters around Chakan and Ranjangaon while strengthening links between Pune and surrounding economic centres. Faster freight movement and improved commuter access could enhance industrial productivity and reinforce Pune’s position as one of Maharashtra’s key economic engines.

The proposed Outer Ring Road is expected to divert through traffic away from the city’s core, reducing pressure on existing arterial roads and improving journey reliability. Meanwhile, the HCMTR is planned as a dedicated mass transit corridor intended to complement Pune’s expanding Metro network and encourage greater use of public transport. The Pune Integrated Transport Plan also includes provisions for future infrastructure serving the proposed Purandar International Airport through enhanced road connectivity. Transport planners argue that synchronising airport access with regional road and transit networks can support balanced urban expansion while avoiding fragmented infrastructure development. Urban experts caution, however, that road capacity alone cannot deliver sustainable mobility outcomes. Climate-resilient transport systems increasingly depend on integrating public transport, non-motorised mobility, efficient drainage, intelligent traffic management and environmentally responsible construction practices. Incorporating these elements from the planning stage can help cities manage future population growth while reducing emissions and improving resilience to extreme weather events.

The programme is also expected to stimulate economic activity by improving access to employment centres, industrial estates and logistics hubs. Better regional connectivity can reduce travel costs for businesses, improve supply chain efficiency and encourage investment across the Pune Metropolitan Region. As implementation progresses, timely land acquisition, environmental clearances and coordinated execution among multiple agencies will be essential to maintaining project schedules. Infrastructure analysts believe the long-term success of Pune’s transport transformation will ultimately be measured not only by reduced congestion but also by its ability to create a safer, more sustainable and integrated urban mobility system capable of supporting the city’s future growth.
