The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has announced an ambitious plan to construct 10 new double decker flyovers across major traffic corridors in a bid to transform urban mobility and ease the growing pressure on the city’s roads.
This landmark initiative is designed to decongest critical junctions, cut down commute times, and make efficient use of Pune’s limited urban space. Each of these planned flyovers will feature a two-tiered structure, with metro rail lines on the upper deck and road traffic on the lower deck. This approach marks a strategic shift towards integrated, space-saving infrastructure that supports both public and private transport in a sustainable manner.The project will be executed in partnership with the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (Maha-Metro) and the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA). Officials say the plan draws inspiration from the successful double decker flyovers already operational at Karve Road’s Nal Stop and the soon-to-be-completed structure on Ganeshkhind Road.
These flyovers have already demonstrated measurable improvements in traffic flow and commuter satisfaction.The ten new flyovers will be constructed at key traffic hotspots across the city. These include Mundhwa at Mahatma Phule Chowk, Solapur Road at Kalubai Chowk, Dandekar Pul Chowk, Awhalwadi Chowk in Wagholi, Warje at Ambedkar Chowk, Bhusari Colony at Kothrud Bus Depot, Golibar Maidan Chowk, Viman Nagar Chowk, Fatimanagar Chowk in Wanowrie, and Ravidarshan Junction in Manjari.To support this infrastructure overhaul, PMC has allocated ₹2,000 crore in its upcoming 2025–26 budget to road and traffic planning. The funding will also cover associated initiatives including road widening, the development of missing link roads, and the construction of grade separators.
Officials emphasise that this investment is key to future-proofing the city against rising vehicle density and urban sprawl.What sets this project apart is its environmentally aware design. By elevating the metro and road traffic, the plan reduces the need for land acquisition, preserves valuable urban spaces, and promotes a modal shift toward public transportation. This aligns well with Pune’s broader vision of becoming a low-emission, climate-resilient city.Urban development experts view the double decker model as a scalable solution for other Indian cities facing similar challenges with traffic congestion and infrastructure limitations.
