Authorities have begun extensive resurfacing work on the Pune–Solapur national highway following mounting commuter complaints over damaged stretches, potholes and rising safety risks along one of Maharashtra’s busiest transport corridors. The infrastructure upgrade, scheduled for completion before peak monsoon conditions intensify, is expected to improve freight movement, reduce travel delays and strengthen regional connectivity between industrial and agricultural zones. The highway restoration project is being executed in two phases covering the Pune–Indapur and Indapur–Solapur sections. Officials overseeing the works said the intervention goes beyond temporary pothole repairs and instead focuses on rebuilding the road surface through a full overlay process designed to improve durability and long-term performance.
Engineers involved in the project are using dense bituminous macadam technology, a method commonly adopted on high-traffic corridors to create stronger and smoother carriageways capable of withstanding heavy vehicle movement. Transport planners note that the Pune Solapur highway carries substantial commercial traffic linking western Maharashtra’s manufacturing clusters with interior trade and logistics networks, making road quality critical to economic efficiency. The deteriorating condition of several stretches had increasingly disrupted mobility over recent months, particularly for daily commuters, freight operators and intercity buses. Uneven surfaces and deep potholes frequently forced vehicles to slow abruptly, contributing to congestion, higher fuel consumption and increased accident risks.

Damaged roads increase vehicular emissions through stop-start traffic conditions and prolonged idling, while also accelerating wear and tear on public transport fleets and freight vehicles.
