Pune Riverbank Evacuations Follow Rising Dam Releases
Pune: Nearly 70 families were moved from flood-prone neighbourhoods in Pune’s Sinhagad Road corridor after rising water levels in the Mutha River, driven by increased releases from the Khadakwasla reservoir, inundated residential areas on Friday. The precautionary evacuation highlights the growing challenge of balancing reservoir operations with urban flood preparedness as expanding settlements continue to occupy vulnerable riverbank zones.
The evacuation was carried out in Ekta Nagar, a locality that has repeatedly experienced flooding during periods of intense monsoon rainfall. Emergency teams shifted residents to safer locations after water entered residential complexes, commercial establishments and parking areas as reservoir discharge was progressively increased to manage inflows from the dam catchment. Authorities raised reservoir outflow in phases during the day as heavy rainfall across the upper catchment continued to push water levels higher. The increased release caused the Mutha River to swell, resulting in waterlogging across several low-lying pockets adjoining the river. Although discharge levels were reduced later in the evening as rainfall eased, officials maintained surveillance over vulnerable stretches and advised residents living near the river corridor to remain cautious.
