Pune district is set for a renewed spell of rainfall in its ghat areas, with the India Meteorological Department maintaining a yellow alert through August 25. The warning comes despite a rainfall deficit across the district this month, highlighting the uneven nature of Maharashtra’s monsoon. While Pune city is likely to see mainly cloudy conditions and light showers, heavier activity in the hill sections could affect roads and local mobility.
The district recorded 174 mm of rain between August 1 and 23, compared with the normal 216.8 mm for the period, leaving rainfall about 20% below average. The shortfall is significant for water resources and agriculture, but a few days of stronger rainfall will not necessarily eliminate the seasonal gap. The Pune rainfall alert is being driven by weather systems developing over the Bay of Bengal and central India. A low-pressure area formed over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining regions on August 23, with the system expected to move towards north Odisha and adjoining parts of Gangetic West Bengal. A separate shear zone over central India is also influencing rainfall patterns. The impact is expected to vary sharply across the district. Ghat sections are forecast to receive light to moderate rainfall, while urban Pune is likely to experience lighter showers. For hill roads and settlements, even moderate rain can increase the risk of slippery surfaces, reduced visibility, localised water accumulation and temporary travel disruptions.
The wider state picture remains uneven. Maharashtra received 124.3 mm of rainfall between August 1 and 23, against a normal 215.3 mm, translating into a 42% deficiency. Eleven districts are classified as deficient, while another 16 have recorded large deficiencies. Marathwada has the largest regional shortfall at 68%, followed by Vidarbha at 67%. Central Maharashtra, which includes Pune, is comparatively better placed, with rainfall 13% below normal and still classified within the normal category. Satara is the exception, recording rainfall 20% above its expected level during the period.
The IMD expects widespread rainfall across Konkan and Goa from August 24 to 29, while Madhya Maharashtra could see increased activity on August 25. Vidarbha is forecast to receive lighter rainfall through August 29. The Pune rainfall alert therefore presents a mixed picture for the district. Rain in the ghats may temporarily improve local water availability, but it also underlines the need for weather-responsive road management and drainage planning. For Pune’s expanding urban and peri-urban areas, the priority is not simply receiving more rain, but ensuring that intense spells are safely absorbed without increasing flooding, erosion or disruption to daily movement.
